Homework Tips for parents of children with learning
Helping you kids with their homework have other benefits than the obvious; kids are more successful. When parents take an active interest in their kids’ homework — it shows kids that what they do is important. In addition, it gives parents the chance to know more about what kind of help their children need.
Because many, if not most, kids do not like to do their homework, conflicts are created at home. Parents of students with learning difficulties and \ or ADHD suffer most when it comes to the homework battle. Here are some tips that would make their mission easier:
- Set up a homework-friendly area; well-lit, far from sources of distraction like TV, music, etc, and has all the supplies needed, such as papers, pens, sharpeners etc.
- Schedule a regular study time. For young kids immediately after coming back from school or following a short break depending on the student’s age. 30 minutes for elementary school and 40 minutes for older students. For high school students homework can be done before or after dinner and before bedtime
- The best time to start is after half an hour of rest or play (but not electronic games).
- Let the child choose which assignment to start with.
- Divide the assignment into parts and give a 10 minute break between each part.
- Encourage the child by rewarding him with extra play time, a favorite food for dinner.
