LD at a Glance

Learning involves input of information followed by its integration, interpretation, memorizing, remembering and then finally resulting as an output through language or motor activity. People with learning disabilities face difficulties with one or more of these steps. Learning Disabilities circumscribe a variety of disorders that affect the acquiring, retaining, understanding, organizing or using verbal and / or non-verbal information.

Learning disabilities range in severity and continually interfere with the acquisition and use of one or more of the following important skills:

Oral language (e.g., listening, speaking, understanding)

Reading (e.g., decoding, comprehension)

Writing (e.g., spelling, written expression)

Mathematics (e.g., computation, problem solving)

But individuals with learning disability are intelligent and have abilities to learn despite difficulties in processing information. They can succeed when individualised self-management skills and strategies are developed to shape their attitude for aptitude.
